It doesn't matter that I haven't found a way to make mp3s with Kristal because MP3s are not the ultimate goal.

I am also going to use my separate professional quality CD burner to record the masters.

If you can't get a high quality sound into the PC then go with audacity. I can monitor a current performance and hear playback simultaneously. By the way, I'm able to use far better mics with the board. I solved it by sending the music through my mixing board.

I believe you have to purchase additional software or different sound cards to do this. Monitoring a performance is not possible with either system.

Audacity will let you do more but Kristal will let you do it better. The better your performance when you record, the less you will want to mess with it. I need effects that will enhance and not recreate the sound. A one microphone recording setup fails to capture the warmth of my violin. The real time adjusting of effects is important to me as well. I change my mind on effects all the time, even a few days down the road as I have listened to the music over and over again. Make sure that your performance is exactly what you want before applying any effects.įor me and what I need to do, I will use Kristal. Remember to be very careful with audacity. There are no punch in and out features on either but cut and paste might help. It will snap to and be seamless if you do this.Īudacity will allow you to overlay sections with silence. Start recording a couple of seconds into the playback so you will have space to move the entire new wave back to where the playback ended. Kristal delays are a bit more troublesome but you will see where the new track ended and where the audio playback ended. Audacity has no dealy when recording, well in reality it does but it's transparent except in monitoring. Recording waves is tricky especially when adding tracks. You can come far close to a professional sound.

Face it, my fiddle is accoustic and I want the output to remain as close to accoustic as possible. To me, the Kristal effects sounds are much more natural than the audacity effects. You can hear the changes you make in real time. Kristal lets you play the music and make tiny adjustments as you go along. Audacity allows you to preview an effect before applying it. The effects effect track output not the wav file itself. I like Kristal much better in this aspect, you only have 2 effects per track at any given time and 3 master effects. You only have a limited chance to undo any changes other than by saving your work at a high hard drive expense and tedious redoing. With Audacity you can also add as many effects to each track as you wish but here comes a downfall. It has attractive features that allow you to do everything in a few minutes and upload a file so we can all hear it on the fiddle forum.įor Zoom control, Audacity has it hands down especially since you can add effects to tiny portions of the wave file no matter how small. In fact, unless someone tells me different, Kristal won't do that at all. There are more features to this package that I have not yet explored.įor quick use in creating a sharable MP3 with right now results is Audacity. The master output has balanced volume control, and effects. Zoom control go to about 5 thousands of a second (my estimate because I can't really tell)Įach track or individuall section a track can be colored. Has it's own balance and volume controls. More functions are available like beat finder and track alignment.Ĭross Delay with ten individual setings and control for each. You can see down to 5 millions of a second using zoom. Tones (not very musical to say the least) Plucks (Interesting, I toyed with this but you are better off converting some midi sounds into wave format.) There is a master display for output volume that display left and right volumes.Įxport to waves, MP3's and OGG Vorbis options are available for saving. You can mute any track or give it a solo boost. You can adjust input volume for recording. You can add label tracks in order to flag particular spots. Tons of effects are available and each effect can be applied to the tiniest segment of the track.Įach track can has it's own balance and volume controls. I can record as many tracks as I like given harddrive limitations. I have toyed both audacity and Kristal sound recently and I would recommend either of these freeware packages to you.
